Bret Johnson

Founder, The Hastening

Bret is a Pastor, Leader, and Missions Mobilizer.

In 2017, Bret Johnson started The Hastening. You can check out this web site to see the importance of what we are trying to do.

The Hastening primarily exists to do level-one missions mobilization. Our primary tool for this is the Kairos Course, a 10-week (usual format) worldview and Christian discipleship experience designed to help believers in Jesus understand what God is doing in the world and how to join Him in it.

Since starting The Hastening, more than 300 people have taken the Kairos course led by Bret from all over the world. More than 75 facilitators have also been trained during that time and he currently is also on the national team for Simply Mobilizing USA, the group that oversees the Kairos course.

Before this, Pastor Bret had a lot of different but significant ministry experiences:

Pastor Bret has served as a Lead Pastor, Church Planter, Youth Pastor, and Interim Pastor throughout his career.

Until May 2009, Bret served as the Lead Pastor of South Hills Church Community in the Las Vegas/Henderson area of southern Nevada (now called “Mosaic” Church). South Hills Church Community started in 2001 with just a handful of people and grew to a church of 1,000 people in eight years under Bret’s leadership. South Hills also developed two properties worth $5 million and $20 million in that time.

Until January of 2000, Bret Johnson served for more than ten years as the Associate Pastor at Redwood Chapel Community Church in Castro Valley, CA (located on the east side of the San Francisco Bay). As Associate Pastor, Bret headed the Student Ministries Department, and Missions Department and was responsible for many special events. Bret’s ministry to teenagers at Redwood Chapel was extensive with over 400 students in regular attendance each week.

Pastor Johnson worked with students (Jr. High, High School, and College) primarily for seventeen years before starting South Hills Church. As a dedicated member of the National Network of Youth Ministries, he coordinated church efforts in the Bay Area during the 1990s. These efforts included huge youth evangelistic events reaching thousands of teenagers each fall.

In 1996, Bret spearheaded the Josh McDowell Bay Area Right from Wrong Campaign in conjunction with Santa Clara Valley Youth For Christ. Over 7,000 students attended this campaign. In addition, over 4,000 parents attended the Josh Adult seminars. In 1997, Bret was the Coordinator for the Youth Night of the Billy Graham Crusade and was the MC that evening in front of 55,000 people.

Bret is very interested and has a passion for cross-cultural ministry. He has worked in several countries speaking, teaching, and especially leading teams of students to work and serve in these foreign countries. In 1999, Bret wrote a tract in Spanish that was passed out by hand to more than 5,000 people in Mexico City and the southern state of Oaxaca. The evangelistic dramas led by Pastor Bret's teams have been presented to thousands of people in Mexico.

Bret Johnson grew up in southern California, attended Whittier College, Talbot Seminary (a graduate school of Biola University in southern California) and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Ministry degree from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, IL. Bret has been married to Sallie (from the Bay Area) since 1986. They will celebrate 38 years of marriage in 2024. They have three grown children: Kyle (and wife, Destiny), Kurt and wife, Melissa) and Kailie (and husband, Miguel). Bret stays in shape through Crossfit, loves to play golf, travel, read and write.
